Why I See So Many Women Stuck in Stress Mode
Stress Awareness Month always feels like an important one to talk about, because if I am honest, this is one of the biggest issues I see in my clinic.
So many women come to me feeling completely exhausted but at the same time unable to switch off.
They are juggling work, family, responsibilities and trying to look after their health, but their body is constantly in a state of stress. And what is frustrating for them is that they are often doing all the “right things” but still not feeling better.
What I always explain is that this is not just in your head.
This is your nervous system being overstimulated and your body staying in a constant fight or flight state.
And when that happens, it affects everything.
How Stress Affects Your Gut, Hormones and Energy
When your body is under ongoing stress, it produces cortisol, your main stress hormone.
In short bursts, cortisol is helpful. But when it stays elevated, it starts to create problems.
I see this show up as:
- Bloating and digestive discomfort
- Constipation or irregular bowel movements
- Hormonal imbalance
- Weight gain, especially around the middle
- Anxiety and poor sleep
- Constant fatigue
Your gut and your nervous system are deeply connected. If your gut is not functioning properly, your body becomes much less resilient to stress.
This is why in my clinic, I never look at stress on its own. I always bring it back to gut health as well.
Why Calming the Nervous System Changes Everything
One of the biggest shifts I see with clients is when we stop pushing the body harder and start supporting it instead.
You do not need more restriction, more exercise or more pressure.
You need to feel safe in your body again.
When the nervous system starts to calm down:
- Digestion improves
- Energy becomes more stable
- Cravings reduce
- Sleep improves
- Hormones begin to rebalance
And this is where real progress happens.
7 Simple Ways to Calm Your Nervous System Naturally
These are the exact areas I focus on with clients. Nothing extreme, just simple, consistent changes that support your body.
1. Start Your Day Without Stress
The way you start your morning sets the tone for your entire day.
If the first thing you do is check your phone, rush around or skip food, your body goes straight into stress mode.
I always encourage clients to slow this down.
Even ten minutes of calm, getting natural light or having a proper breakfast can help regulate your cortisol levels and support your nervous system.
2. Support Your Gut Health First
This is a big one.
If your gut is out of balance, your body is constantly under stress, even if you do not realise it.
Poor digestion, bloating or constipation all send signals to the body that something is not right.
This is why I focus so much on gut health in my clinic in Dublin.
When we improve digestion and support the gut properly, the nervous system often follows.
3. Where Colon Hydrotherapy Can Help
For many of my clients, especially those dealing with chronic constipation or sluggish digestion, additional support is needed.
This is where colon hydrotherapy in Dublin can be incredibly beneficial.
I use colon hydrotherapy as part of a broader gut health plan, not as a quick fix, but as a way to support the body.
It can help to:
- Relieve constipation
- Reduce bloating and discomfort
- Support regular bowel movements
- Help clients feel lighter and less sluggish
Many women come into my clinic feeling uncomfortable and overwhelmed, and after combining colon hydrotherapy with the right nutrition, they notice a real shift in how they feel.
If your gut is not moving properly, your body stays in a stressed state. Supporting digestion can make a huge difference.
4. Balance Blood Sugar Through Nutrition
One of the biggest hidden stressors on the body is unstable blood sugar.
Skipping meals, relying on caffeine or eating lots of sugar causes spikes and crashes, which puts pressure on your nervous system.
I always bring it back to simple nutrition.
Eating regular meals with protein, healthy fats and fibre helps to stabilise energy and reduce cortisol spikes.
This is one of the quickest wins for many clients.
5. Use Targeted Supplements to Support the Body
Sometimes, the body needs extra support.
This is where nutrition supplements can play an important role.
Depending on the person, I may recommend:
- Magnesium to support relaxation and sleep
- Omega three for inflammation and brain health
- Probiotics for gut health
- B vitamins for energy and stress support
The key here is personalised support. Not every supplement suits everyone.
When used correctly, supplements can help calm the nervous system and support the body in a much more effective way.
6. Reduce Caffeine and Stimulation
This is often a difficult one, but it makes a big difference.
If your body is already stressed, adding caffeine on top can increase cortisol and worsen anxiety, sleep issues and energy crashes.
I am not saying you have to cut it out completely, but being mindful of how much you are relying on it can be a game changer.
Often, when we improve nutrition and gut health, the need for caffeine naturally reduces.
7. Create Space for Your Body to Relax
This does not have to be complicated.
It is not about adding more to your to do list.
It is about giving your body moments throughout the day where it feels safe and calm.
This could be:
- Going for a walk
- Taking a few deep breaths
- Stepping away from your phone
- Sitting quietly for a few minutes
These small moments help bring your body out of stress mode and back into balance.
Why Lifestyle Matters More Than You Think
What I always remind clients is that your lifestyle is either supporting your nervous system or working against it.
Sleep, movement, food and stress levels all play a role.
You do not need perfection, but you do need consistency.
Small changes done daily will always have a bigger impact than extreme changes that do not last.
A Personal Approach Works Best
There is no one plan that works for everyone.
Every woman I work with is different. Different symptoms, different lifestyle, different needs.
This is why I always take a personalised approach in my clinic.
Whether it is through gut health support, colon hydrotherapy, nutrition plans or supplements, the goal is always the same.
To help your body feel safe, supported and able to function properly again.
If You Are Feeling Stuck, There Is a Reason
If you are constantly tired, bloated, stressed or struggling with your weight, your body is trying to tell you something.
It is not a lack of willpower.
It is a sign that your system needs support.
